The Pandian Express is a train route of the Southern Railway zone of the Indian Railways and runs between Chennai Egmore and Madurai Junction via Tiruchirapalli. The name of the train commemorates the 10th-13th century Pandian Kingdom of Tamil Nadu. It is a standard train consisting of 24 coaches. The main towns on the way are Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Vriddhachalam, Ariyalur, Tiruchirapalli and Dindigul. The train operates daily and covers a distance of 497 km.The train runs at a top speed of 110 km/hr It is one of the few trains to have a full 1st AC coach and is a Prestigious train with Southern Railways.
This train had the livery changed twice - first it had the "Olive-Green livery", separated by 2 yellow-lines between the upper & lower part of the windows & later on it was changed to "Maroon colour" on the MG.
This train was numbered as 6717/6718 when it was run on MG. It was hauled by YAM4 - electric loco from Chennai Egmore to Villupuram Jn. & then from Villupuram Jn. to Madurai, it was hauled by YDM2 - diesel loco, similar changes were followed on its return journey.

RELEVANCE:
The southern region of Tamil Nadu was ruled by the Pandiyas before the arrival of the muhals. Their capital city was Madurai. Hence the name "Pandiyan" express. This name signifies the history of the state.
