panel study

A longitudinal study of the same group of people over time. By contrast with a cohort study the panel study gathers information on the same people at each time point. In practice the representation is not constant over time, because of attrition. A disadvantage compared with a cross-sectional study is that the panel ceases to be representative of the entire population because of the absence of younger members in the later years of the study.
