A paper trail is a set of documents that can be used to gain information about a person, business, organization, or other entity. This includes, but is not limited to, their location, behaviors, activities and habits. Paper-based audit trails naturally present in paper-based ballot and potentially present in electronic voting are also referred to as paper trails.

This term is used most often by lawyers and investigative journalists
