Review

An ambitious year for post-rock heroes Tarentel wrapped up in 2004 with the outstanding We Move Through Weather album. This only ramped up the group for an even more ambitious first half of 2005, including such planned releases as a 12" on EN/OF, an EP on Acurela, and two EPs on Temporary Residence. The first of these offerings is the Paper White EP, which starts off slightly out of character and quite furiously with the heavy percussive attack of "Isalais Straight." The song calms down midway through to gently introduce the group's signature atmospherics and drones beautifully stripped to the bare essentials. The remainder of the EP is Tarentel's signature glacially paced post-rock that recalls the glory years of Slint and Mogwai. Most of this material was recorded during the earliest portions of the We Move Through Weather sessions, and helps to paint a clearer picture of the group's original directions and intentions. Paper White isn't as challenging a listen as its sister EP, Big Black Square, but it is far more accessible and provides a rewarding experience for those who listen attentively. ~ Rob Theakston, Rovi
