Southern Italian: 1. nickname for a greedy or voracious person, from pappa ‘he eats’, from pappare ‘to munch or gobble’, or from a short form of a compound of this verb + a noun, as for example Pappalardo, Pappacoda (coda ‘tail’). 2. possibly a variant of Papa.
