While neither Papua New Guinean athlete managed to advance out of the first round, both managed to set new national records in their events.
Papua New Guinea's only swimmer in Athens came within a couple of tenths of a second from qualifying for semifinals in two of his three events, but fell just short, with his best performance an 18th in the 100 metre butterfly.
Toua was well back of the medal positions, but with her final lift managed to pass a French lifter to avoid a last-placed finish.
