Papus (pseud. of Gérard Encausse) (1865-1916). One of the leading figures in the resurgence of occultism during the late 19th c. with his Traité élémentaire de science occulte (1888), Papus contributed, through his contacts with the literary and artistic milieu, to the Symbolist aspiration to reconcile scientific and mystical approaches to art.
