Plot

In this patriotic war drama, a unit of Army recruits train for a parachute corps. One is an arrogant football star who finds jumping a kick. Another is a coward who eventually finds his courage. Finally there is a chronic bumbler. The coward and jock find themselves competing for the affections of an indecisive young woman. The filmmakers of this movie paid careful attention to detail and was made with the cooperation of the 501st Parachute Battalion at Fort Benning, Georgia using actual paratroopers. The viewer is taken through every stage of a jump including folding the chute at the beginning. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Plot

The film is a fictional story set in the 501st Parachute Infantry. Two Privates join the battalion, one, Bill Burke is the son of the battalion's commander. His romantic rival Don Morse battles him for the attention of Kit Richards. Bill finds out he's terrified of parachuting but straightens out during airborne manoeuvers where he saves Don's life and the two destroy an ammunition warehouse that is the target of the unit's assault. The film ends with a military parade and the awarding of the then new parachute wings.

Production

From the signing of the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 in the United States and American interest of military matters, Hollywood provided a rash of films in 1941 about the various branches of the US Armed Forces, both serious and comic.

In its entry in the genre, RKO sent a film crew to Fort Benning to film America's recently formed paratroopers of the 501st Parachute Infantry for their film. The founder of the American parachute troops General William C. Lee doubled for Robert Preston in some scenes.[1]
