pl.n. (used with a sing. or pl. verb)
  1. Personal belongings.
  2. The articles used in a particular activity; equipment: a photographer's paraphernalia. See synonyms at equipment.
  3. A married woman's personal property exclusive of her dowry, according to common law.

[Medieval Latin paraphernālia, neuter pl. of paraphernālis, pertaining to the parapherna, a married woman's property exclusive of her dowry, from Greek : para-, beyond; see para-1 + phernē, dowry.]

paraphernalia

originally denoted the personal property (Greek parapherna 'things set apart [from a dowry]') that a married woman was legally entitled to regard as her own. Over several centuries of use in English it has acquired the general meaning 'miscellaneous belongings or equipment'; it is still normally treated as a plural noun although occasional singular use is attested from the 18th century (a whole paraphernalia of plums, 1845). Some modern examples follow:
Paraphernalia in his flat included Indian clubs and an adapted table to which boys were tied—Independent, 1989
Exposed beams, road signs and horsey paraphernalia, it [a pub] had the perfect mix without being twee—Mirror, 2007.
