Parenteral describes the introduction of nutrition, a medication, or other substance into the body via a route other than the gastro-intestinal tract, especially via infusion, injection or implantation.[1] Parenteral nutrition refers to providing nutrition via the veins.

Etymology

From Greek para = "beside" and enteron = "intestine", because it bypasses the intestines.
