1998's The Paris Concert for Amnesty International features a diverse lineup of artists and an appearance by the Dalai Lama in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The themes of political and spiritual freedom are woven through performances like Peter Gabriel, Youssou N'Dour, Bruce Springsteen's rendition of Bob Marley's "Get Up, Stand Up," and Tracy Chapman's "New Beginning." Alanis Morissette's "Baba," Asian Dub Foundation's "Black White," and Radiohead's three-song set ("Karma Police," "Bones," and "Paranoid Android") are some of the show's other inspired performances, though Led Zeppelin, and especially Shania Twain, seem a bit out of place. The DVD of Paris Concert for Amnesty International is basically a straight transfer of the VHS version of the concert, but its Dolby Digital Surround Sound is surprisingly uneven and muddy, making the disc primarily worthwhile to diehard supporters of the artists included here, or of Amnesty International, only. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi
