partheneion (‘maiden song’), form of Greek choral lyric, a processional hymn sung by a choir of girls, upon a religious, but not a solemn, occasion. Partheneia were composed by Alcman, Simonidēs, Bacchylidēs, and Pindar. Fairly substantial fragments of some by Alcman and Pindar have been found on papyri.
