In the 1982 season, Culpepper's defense, known as the Junkyard Dogs, knocked off Midland Lee for the first time in 14 years. In 1984 he took the head coaching job at Lufkin High School. A losing program for 9 straight years, Culpepper began to plant the seeds of turning Lufkin into a winning program. An 8 year tenure at LHS, Culpepper lead 3 teams to the state high school playoffs (this is during the time that only 1 school from each district went to the state playoffs).
