Review

The 11-strong El Gran Combo steps things up on Pata-Pata Jala Jala Boogaloo. First, there are the psychedelic go-go gals on the jacket. The lead track is the mod classic "Going Out of My Head." Sung in English with a Desi Arnaz accent, it is a little preposterous but utterly charming, not to mention a nice offset to standard boogaloo. After some OK non-boogaloo cuts, side one ends with another mod classic, "Love Is Blue" (unfortunately an instrumental). Side two has the real goods: four great songs in a row. "Pata Pata" is the Miriam Makeba hit, here very lively; "Kiss My Nose" is somewhat absurd, outdone only by the pig "oinks" in the original "Transplante de Corazon." ~ Tony Wilds, All Music Guide
