Pathak is a community of Brahmins. Pathaks have served as the Chief Justice of India and as Vice President of India. Usually a surname, Pathak is a Sanskrit word and means Reader or person who is anxious to learn and acquire knowledge. The Pathak surname can be of either Marathi, Gujarati or Punjabi origin and is generally prevalent in Gujarat, Punjab, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Asom, and Kumaon of Uttarakhand and also in several areas of Nepal: Kathmandu, Ilam, Jhapa, Syangja, Rupandehi, Nawalparasi, chitwan and Dhading.
In Hinduism, Brahmin refers to the class of educators and preachers. It is the highest class according to Hindu Dharma. There are many references in the Ramayana and Mahabharata about the importance of a Brahmin. In the Vedic period, the Brahmins preferred isolation and solely dedicated their life to propagating knowledge and Dharma.
