Biography

Throughout the '80s, Killing Joke managed to secure themselves a reputation as a fiercely energetic post-punk outfit, with drummer Paul Ferguson adding a tribal beat to the mix long before bands like Sepultura made the sound fashionable.

In 1979 Ferguson was a member of the Matt Stagger Band, along with keyboard player Jaz Coleman. When Coleman left to form his own band, Ferguson jumped ship too. They were quickly joined by bassist Youth and guitarist Geordie, releasing a series of singles on their before being signed by Virgin. Killing Joke was soon a popular live act, attracting critical and commercial success in the mid-'80s. However, by the time it came to record their seventh album, Outside the Gate, internal tensions had begun to pull the band apart. Ferguson was the first to leave, being fired by Coleman over disputes about the material. Soon afterwards, the band folded, with the members pursuing other projects. Ferguson joined U.S. alternative rockers Warrior Soul, appearing on their debut album, Last Decade Dead Century.

In 1992, he hooked up with his former Killing Joke comrades in the industrial collective Murder Inc., providing his characteristic tribal beats alongside Martin Atkins' more traditional playing. This lead to a number of appearances with Atkins' own project Pigface, both recording and touring. Since then, Ferguson has remained away from the mainstream music scene, despite rumors that he was to rejoin Killing Joke for the recording of Pandemonium. ~ Jim Harper, Rovi

Paul Ferguson (born Matthew Paul Ferguson, 31 March 1958) is a rock drummer, best known for his work in the post-punk/industrial group, Killing Joke, and cult English punk band, Pink Parts. Ferguson was a founder member of Killing Joke, and was their drummer from 1978 to 1987, and was known as 'Big Paul Ferguson' during this period.

Following disagreements with lead singer Jaz Coleman about new material and the direction the band was going, Ferguson, together with bassist Paul Raven, departed from the band in 1987 to work on other musical projects, notably with rock outfits 'Warrior Soul' and 'Murder Inc.' The last album he recorded with Killing Joke during this period was the 1986 release Brighter than a Thousand Suns.

Ferguson rejoined Killing Joke for their 2008 reunion, which saw the original line-up together for the first time since 1982. Ferguson recorded with Killing Joke for the first time in 24 years for their 2010 studio album Absolute Dissent. He remains with Killing Joke, having drummed on their April 2012 album release MMXII and subsequent tour.
