(b Berlin, 11 Jan 1872; d Salzburg, 13 Nov 1944). German composer. He studied at the Veit Conservatory, Berlin, then lived in London (1896-1908) before returning to teach and compose in Austria and Germany. His music has connections with Strauss, Reger and Pfitzner. On the basis of his 130 lieder and nine operas he was among the most frequently performed of living German composers in the 1920s; the operas include Hanneles Himmelfahrt (1927), Friedemann Bach (1931) and Der Prinz von Homburg (1935).
