Paul Hankar

(1859–1901)

Belgian architect. Influenced by Beyaert and Viollet-le-Duc, he later became one of the most important protagonists of Art Nouveau. His buildings were exquisitely detailed, and include the Hôtel Zegers-Regnard (1888), Hôtel Hankar (1893), and the superbly crafted Hôtel Ciamberlani (1897), all in Brussels. Influenced by Japanese art, his work in turn influenced Otto Wagner, who saw some of Hankar's lushly inventive interiors in 1897.
