Hiffernan, Paul (1719-1777), journalist and playwright. Born in Co. Dublin, he studied at Montpellier for the priesthood and returned to Dublin about 1747. His works include The Self Enamour'd, or the Ladies' Doctor (1750), The Hiberniad (1754), The Earl of Warwick (1764), The Philosophic Whim (1774), and The Wishes of a Free People (1761), a dramatic poem. Hiffernan made scurrilous attacks on David Garrick and others, notably in the Bickerstaffe affair.
