THE STORY OF WIPEOUT:
The year is 2052. The F3600 Racing League has been in business for the past two years -- and it doesn't look to stop anytime soon. Though the races are in their infancy, the technology behind them began in top-secret U.S. government facilities as far back as the 1950s. On May 4th, 2018, the government released its antigravity technology in hopes of using it to promote peace after nearly 70 years of incorporating it into weaponry.
By 2024, though, the World Technology Symposium had declared antigravity technology too expensive and useless for mass transit. In order to discourage development the organization increased the tax on fossil fuels. Regardless, the most dedicated scientists pushed on behind the back of the government and the Symposium, continuing development of antigravity applications. Just before Halloween 2034, the government found out about the scientists' secret spending and the resulting inquiry quickly forced a developmental stalemate.
The inquiry blew the top off of the secret development. After much begging and pleading, the government granted the scientists an exhibition of their technology before it was scheduled for destruction. The below excerpt from "The European Daily Comment" by science editor Michael McDonald chronicles the events of April 15th, 2035 after the exhibition:
"When we gathered in the searing heat of the Nevada desert, we expected perhaps a crudely built prototype model and some embarrassed shuffling on the part of the discredited scientists. Instead we were met by the Nx 1000 antigravity vehicle which flew across the special track so smoothly and with such speed that jaws promptly dropped, and from somewhere across the hills came the sound of words being eaten. It was the government officials who looked uncomfortable as the world's press asked, 'Who are the fools now?'"
With real tangible proof that the technology was controllable, efficient and fairly clean, the government reinstated the antigravity research program and lifted the high tax on fossil fuels as research continued. To make up for its arrogant ways, the U.S. government sponsored a worldwide discussion over the implications of the reaffirmed antigravity technology. As 2038 came and went, much research was underway for mass transit and personal transportation vehicles that utilize antigravity technology. The first production vehicles rolled off the line in 2044, receiving rave reviews across the board from car magazines and racing enthusiasts. Seeing the potential moneymaker that the speed of antigravity racing offered, the F3600 Racing League was quickly established, the first race taking place in 2050. Below is an excerpt from the official program at the race's inception from Dirk Breakwater, chief executive of the F3600 Race League Commission:
"And to the world watching this event -- already bigger than the Super Bowl or the Olympic Games -- we say, "See you again next year!"
In the beginning, the first race simply tested speed and skill. But to keep interest even higher, weapons were quickly introduced allowing competitors to blast each other as they zipped around the tracks. Over the past two years, refinements have improved the tracks, the vehicles and the weapons to make them longer and more challenging, faster -- and powerful! All across the world, construction on new tracks continues, and everyone is in love with F3600!
Sitting on the starting grid, you listen to your vehicle hum all around you. It's the moment you've been waiting for. The time has come for you to give glory to your team -- and yourself. ~ Shawn Sackenheim, All Game Guide
