High school and college career

Maholm is a graduate of Germantown High School in Germantown, Tennessee. He was a three-year letterman while pitching at Mississippi State.

Professional career

Maholm was selected by the Pirates in the first round (8th overall) of the 2003 Major League Baseball Draft.

He made his major league debut, as a starter, on August 30, 2005 against the Milwaukee Brewers and pitched 8.0 shutout innings, earning his first career win. He finished the 2005 season, providing the Pirates with a 3-1 record in 6 games, with a 2.18 ERA.

Maholm pitched his first complete game shutout, while giving up only 3 hits in a 3-0 victory over the Houston Astros on April 24, 2007

In a 2008 spring training game against the New York Yankees, Maholm struck out actor/comedian Billy Crystal, who had signed a one-day contract with the Yankees. Crystal did, however, manage to foul a ball off before striking out.

In 2009, he hit his first major league home run off or Mets pitcher John Maine.

After the 2008 season, Maholm signed a three year contract extension worth a guaranteed $14.5 million and a team option for 2012. [2]
