Zelinsky, Paul O. (1953– ), prizewinning American illustrator of Grimms' Tales. His Hansel and Gretel (1984, Caldecott Medal of Honor, text by Rika Lesser), Rumpelstiltskin (1986), and Rapunzel (1997, Caldecott Gold Medal) incorporate an awareness of historical change into both text and illustration. (There are explanatory notes following each tale.) As in the early Grimm version, his enraged Rumpelstiltskin simply flies out of the window at the end, leaving behind a joyous miller's daughter saved by her faithful servant woman. With similar historicity, his Rapunzel grows to maturity in a 17th‐century tower that reflects the tale's (late) 17th‐century origins.
