Biography

One of Canada's most successful jazz pianists, Paul Tobey (born September 7, 1962) began performing early in the church where his father was minister. Tobey studied classical music from age eight, but it was not until he entered community college that he encountered straight-ahead jazz. It was after seeing legendary pianist Oscar Peterson perform that Tobey decided to study jazz, first earning his diploma at Mohawk College in Hamilton in 1981 and getting his BFA in 1984 from Montreal's Concordia University with a minor in computer studies. During his time in Montreal, Tobey made pilgrimages to study with pianist Kenny Barron in N.Y.C., a relationship he credits with developing his style and career path. He moved to Toronto in 1995 where his music flourished producing two albums, Orpheus in 1994 and A Little Rain Must Fall in 1997. The first Canadian to be signed to the Arkadia label, Tobey has also received sponsorship from such venerable Canadian institutions as the Department of Foreign Affairs, FACTOR (Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent on Record), and the prestigious Ontario Arts Council. ~ Matt Collar, All Music Guide

Canadian jazz pianist Paul Tobey (born September 7, 1962) is also a producer, arranger, composer, director with several credits under his belt including 6 jazz albums, 2 popular piano albums, 1 symphony album, 3 Christmas Albums, 2 documentaries, one Live Performance DVD and one anthology.

He has toured and recorded with some of the countries best musicians such as Terry Clark, Jim Vivian, Pat Labarbera, Alex Dean, to name but a few, and has headlined in 16 countries, including Le Festival de Jazz de Montreal, The Yokohama Jazz Festival and the Hague Jazz Festival. He has toured Canada several times, including a University bound tour to promote jazz education. In 2006, Paul made his first debut with symphony, launching the Road to Santiago Suite, 9 movements for piano and symphony.

Among his credits, Tobey has been nominated for a Juno Award for Best Jazz Contemporary Album, and has won several awards including Jazz Album of the Year, Pianist of the Year, and the IAJE Award for Service to Jazz Education. He has also been awarded several cash awards for touring, composition, recording etc from prestigious entities such as Canada Council for the Arts, The Foundation to Assist Canadian Talent on Record, Ontario Arts Council and Canadian Heritage.

Partnered with the Expositor (an Osprey Media Newspaper) in 2006, Paul Tobey lends his talents to an annual "Christmas Traditions" songbook and sing-a-long CD in support of the Sunshine Dreams for Kids.

In 2007, the fundraising program expanded to other Osprey Media Newspapers including the Standard, The Tribune and The Review benefiting the Big Brothers Big Sisters Agencies of Niagara.

Paul is also a strong advocate creating awareness of preventable Tinnitus, educating people against hearing loss and ear damage. In 2004 he launched his book "Tinnitus Free Living" which includes audio downloads and workbooks.
