papaya

Large green or yellow melon-like fruit of the tropical tree Carica papaya, widely grown in all tropical regions. The proteolytic enzyme, papain, is derived from the fruit. A 150-g portion is a rich source of vitamin C; a good source of vitamin A (as carotene); supplies 55 kcal (230 kJ).
