Payap University is a private university located in Chiang Mai, Thailand. It was established in 1974 as a private institution founded by the Church of Christ in Thailand. Payap is a founding member of the Association of Private Higher Education Institutions in Thailand, and an active member of the Association of Christian Universities and Colleges in Asia, as well as the Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning. In 1984, it became the first private institution granted university status in Thailand. The name "Payap" is a Thai word meaning "Northwest", in reference to the region of the country where the university is located.
Payap University is a Liberal Arts and Pre-Professional School offering 27 undergraduate degrees and 8 graduate degrees in 10 faculties in both the Thai language and English language. Several of Payap's faculties are nationally recognized, notably its Thai programs in Nursing and Music. There are more than 6,000 students studying at Payap, roughly 6% of whom are studying in the English-speaking International College (IC) program. This program is relatively new. The IC student body represents more than 30 countries, though English is the language of common discourse.
Historically, Payap University has saught modernity in its curriculum, while adhering to traditional Christian American educational principals. It has attracted a multi-ethnic faculty and adopted a progressive approach to research and community development programs. It has hosted numerous international conferences.
Payap has an updated quality assurance program based on service-learning, student-centered learning, and in broadening its use of information technologies and electronic information resources.
Its motto is "Truth and Service".
