A chief who illegally cedes lands to whites, a term used disparagingly by the Shawnee chief Tecumseh at the signing of the Treaty of Greenville (Ohio) in August 1795. Tecumseh believed that all Native American land was the common property of all the Native American tribes and that any one tribe should not cede or sell land on its own. He accused the chiefs of giving away territory that was not theirs.
