Biography

Before bassist Justin Chancellor joined Tool in 1995 (replacing departed original member Paul D'Amour), he was a member of the British art metal outfit Peach -- issuing a sole full-length (Giving Birth to a Stone) as well as two EP's and a single during their brief tenure as a band. Tool and Peach toured Europe together in 1994, and a friendship was struck between the two up-and-coming bands. When Peach called it a day in 1995, Chancellor at first turned down the offer to join Tool, but quickly reconsidered, joining the group in time for the recording of their breakthrough sophomore effort, Aenima. In 2000, the indie label Vile Beat Records reissued Peach's Giving Birth to a Stone (with newly added artwork by Tool guitarist Adam Jones), while Tool has been known to cover a Peach song or two in their live set. ~ Greg Prato

Peach (also known as Peach [gb]) was a band from England that originally recorded between 1991 and 1994. They played metal music of a progressive style. The original line-up consisted of Simon Oakes, Rob Havis, Ben Durling and Justin Chancellor. Peach supported the band Tool on the European leg of their tours throughout 1993-1994 after the release of Undertow, and then released an album, Giving Birth to a Stone, themselves. After touring to promote their debut album, Peach recorded a second one, Volume II. It was never released due to a failure to secure a major record deal. In 1995 Oakes quit to form Geyser, but Peach attempted to continue with replacement singer Rod Sterling. However, they suffered more misfortune when Rob Havis left for fellow Tool support act Submarine (later to become JetBoy DC). The name Peach was then dropped in favour of Sterling. Despite also losing Justin Chancellor to Tool in 1995 after Tool's first bassist, Paul D'Amour, left, Sterling signed a deal with Mantra Records and released an album (Monster Lingo) and had four singles.

In 2000, Giving Birth to a Stone was reissued to unexpected relative success on the DC Based Beatville Records imprint Vile Beat. Realising that their music was in fact appreciated, Simon Oakes and Rob Havis decided to form a band again, but since Justin and Ben were no longer there, they chose to pick a new name instead of using Peach. The name they chose was Suns of the Tundra, and they still play several old Peach songs in their live set.
