Pedernales Province

The Southwest & Along the Haitian Border: Pedernales

<< Places to Eat || Places to Stay >>

The farthest southwest town in the DR, Pedernales is a fishing village right on the Haitian border, at the end of Highway 44. It has a quiet public beach and makes a handy base for exploring the Parque Nacional Jaragua, the Bahía de las Aguilas, and parts of the Sierra Bahoruco, though accommodations are generally spartan. While there’s no Haitian immigration office at the border here, you can usually get permission to enter Haiti from here for a few hours if you want to (this may include a small monetary token of your appreciation to the guards). The Haitian fishing village of Anse-à-Pitres is on the other side, where you should report to the police station to make your presence known. A Haitian market is held on Mondays and Fridays in the no-man’s-land between the two border posts.
