The major urban centres in Pendle are Nelson and Colne, with smaller towns like Barnoldswick and Earby added since boundary changes in the 1970s brought them into this area of Lancashire from Yorkshire. It is a key marginal with the Conservative lead over Labour being similar to the national lead in the 2010 General Election.
Following their review of parliamentary representation in Lancashire in the run-up to the United Kingdom general election, 2010 the Boundary Commission for England decided to make only minor changes to the seats in East Lancashire. The new Pendle constituency contains only those wards within the district boundary, meaning the district council area is co-terminous with the parliamentary boundary.
As part of the Sixth Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies which commenced in 2011, the Boundary Commission for England propose dividing the Pendle constituency into two separate seats.
'Burnley North and Nelson' would incorporate almost all the Pendle council area, including Colne, Trawden and Barrowsford, in addition to Burnley town centre.
A re-drawn 'Ribble Valley' constituency would move Barnoldswick and Earby into a seat with Clitheroe, Slaidburn, Samlesbury and Bamber Bridge [2].
