PA 722 is known by many names along its route. The names include State Road, Cottage Avenue, Petersburg Road, and Oregon Road. The route is a rural alternative to driving on PA 283 and US 30 to get to US 222, where an interchange lies close by the eastern terminus of PA 722.
The route starts at an interchange with PA 283 in between the village of Landisville, and the town of East Petersburg. The route heads east into East Petersburg, where the route meets with PA 741, where it terminates, and PA 72. After passing through the town, the route continues east. In the village of Neffsville, the route has a short concurrency with PA 501, then continues east to its terminus in the village of Oregon.
The route was signed in 1930, and has primarily stayed on the same roads since its inception.[2] Its western terminus terminus was moved once, when US 230 moved to what is now PA 283.
