Sammalahti, Pentti (b. 1950), Helsinki-based Finnish photographer and printer, known equally for his photographic narratives of Irish herdsmen or Hungarian gypsies, his Finnish and Russian landscapes, and his dedication to the photographic book and the development of quality printing methods. His photographic work is conceived on the wing, a traveller's vision encompassing landscapes, peoples, animals (e.g. his series of dogs in Russia). His photographic books, by contrast, are the product of painstaking craftsmanship. The Opus series, including his own and many other photographers' books, has transformed the art of the photographic book in Finland and elsewhere.
