An oil extracted from the peppermint plant, used for its antispasmodic effect on the gut to relieve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, especially abdominal colic. It is also included as an ingredient in many antacid preparations and in preparations to relieve nasal congestion. Peppermint oil is available as enteric-coated capsules or modified-release capsules, which can be obtained without a prescription, but only from pharmacies.

Side effects:
peppermint oil may cause heartburn and (rarely) allergic reactions.

Colpermin (modified-release capsules); Mintec (enteric-coated capsules); plus many other proprietary preparations of which it is an ingredient.
