perfluorocarbons

A group of organic compounds in which protons are replaced by fluorine. Perfluorochemicals enhance the delivery of oxygen to tissues. They have a number of legitimate medical uses, including helping lung cancer patients to breathe, but their use by athletes to artificially enhance oxygen transfer is prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency. See also blood doping.
