Music, dance and theater abound with world-renowned summer festivals held in Avignon, Aix en Provence and centered around the Roman theaters of Orange, Vaison la Romaine, Arles and Nîmes. Aix en Provence, with it is troubadour heritage, is known for music – hosting opera, lyric singing and jazz festivals every summer. During the Avignon Festival in July and August, these take over the whole town. For Les Choralies (page 126; held every three years – the next is in 2007) thousands of choral societies from all over Europe descend on Vaison la Romaine, for performances, competitions and impromptu street performances.
