Inflammation of the periosteum. It is usually an overuse injury due to severe strain at the tendon insertions where the muscle fibres or muscle tendons pull, stretch, or tear. Periostitis of the lower leg is particularly common among athletes who change from one playing surface to another, or who change techniques or equipment. Treatment includes rest, anti-inflammatories, and correction of technical or training faults. See also shin splints.
