Perkinsea is a class of alveolates. Perkinsus is a parasite of bivalve mollusks; it displayes a number of features characteristic of the dinoflagellates including laterally inserted heterodynamic flagella. Two other genera have been described in this class – Cryptophagus and Parvilucifera. Rastromonas may also belong to this grouping.
