A general term applied to superficial fissures occurring at the angles of the mouth. Lesions may result from a variety of causes but most often can be related to deep labial commissures, with associated drooling, licking of the lips, unhygienic conditions, and the overgrowth of bacteria, yeast, or fungi. The term has also been applied to angular cheilosis resulting from riboflavin deficiency but not to the split papule of syphilis or to herpetic lesions.
