Peronnique
[Breton per-, bowl]
Character in Breton folklore whose story parallels that of the Welsh Peredur and the Arthurian Percevel. Peronnik is a poor country orphan who, after many knights have failed, enters the castle Kerglas of the wicked magician Rogear in order to retrieve the stolen lance and cup. When he restores the purloined treasures to the rightful king, peace and prosperity return to the kingdom. Retold in the immensely popular collection by Émile Souvestre, Le Foyer Breton (Paris, 1853; much reprinted).
