USA: twelve cities have this name, a substantial number in tribute to Captain Oliver Hazard Perry (1785–1819), an American naval officer who gained almost legendary status after defeating a British squadron at the Battle of Lake Erie in the 1812 war. Perrysburg in New York and Perryville in Missouri are also named after him.
