Biography

Led by Russian singer/songwriter/keyboardist Angelina Moysov, Persephone's Bees (a name that comes from a poem by Russian poet Osip Mandelstam) had its beginnings soon after Moysov moved to the United States and met guitarist Tom Ayres in 1993. The two began collaborating, drawing from Moysov's childhood influences of Russian folk, Gypsy music, her brother's collection of British and American music, new wave, and underground Russian punk. After the duo went through several unsuccessful rhythm sections, they moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1999. There they made a demo and used it to recruit bassist Bart Davenport and drummer Paul Bertolino.

Following City of Love, a self-produced LP, Persephone's Bees found themselves on bills with Cake and Jonathan Richman, while the title track was added to the soundtrack for the film Bewitched in 2005. Both Bertolino and Davenport had left the band temporarily to focus on other projects, but eventually rejoined in time for Persephone's Bees' full-length major-label debut record, Notes from the Underworld, released by Columbia Records in August 2006. ~ Kenyon Hopkin, All Music Guide

Persephone's Bees is an Oakland-based rock/pop music group.

History

Growing up in Pyatigorsk, Russia, lead singer Angelina Moysov was musically inspired by her family: her mother played traditional folk/gypsy music while her brother played modern music. After immigrating to America in 1993, she formed Persephone's Bees with Tom Ayres (who plays guitar), Paul Bertolino (drums), and Mike Farrell (bass).

Their first LP, City of Love, was nominated for best debut album at the California Music Awards, along with being voted "Best Bay Area Pop Band" by SF Weekly. Afterwards, they signed to Columbia Records and released their major label debut, Notes from the Underworld.

Their song Muzika Dlya Fil'ma is in the video game FIFA 07.

They toured with The New Cars as their opening act during their Winter Road Rage Tour '06.

Albums

Live

In their live performances as the opening act for The New Cars, they play a 5-6 song set featuring "Way to Your Heart", "Nice Day", "Muzika Dlya Fil'ma", and "Paper Plane" among others. They normally end with "City of Love", which is much extended from the studio version, and features Moysov playing the guitar, without looking, behind Ayres' back. Shortly after this, Ayres and Farrell switch instruments, during which Farrell plays a guitar solo.

Media

The song "City Of Love" was used in a Cingular Razr phone commercial and in the film Bewitched. "Nice Day" is used in a Wal-Mart commercial as well as in the TV commercials for the Hilton Hotels. It is also featured on the Nancy Drew movie soundtrack. "Way to your Heart" appeared in a J.C. Penney advertisement during February 2007. "Queen’s Night Out" was used in a branding spot for Gucci. The song "Home" was also used under the end credits of a Sopranos episode.[citation needed] The song "City of Love" was also used in Zac Posen's spring ready-to-wear runway collection in 2007. "Muzika Dlya Fil'ma" is featured on the soundtrack of Fifa 07. "Nice Day" is currently (oct-2007) used on french tv in a commercial for "Les Pages Jaunes", a professional directory.
