Review

Persistence of Time rivals Among the Living as Anthrax's best album and might even be a clear-cut favorite if some of the songs had been trimmed a bit. The more cartoonish side of the band is missing here, trimmed in favor of a dark, uncompromising examination of society's dirty underbelly -- nearly every song rails against hatred and prejudice, but without an excess of optimism. The standout track is, once again, a cover -- Joe Jackson's "Got the Time" -- but the rest of the album is strong enough to hold its own. This is the album for those who want Anthrax's serious side without any of the pop culture references and tributes; others might miss those elements, particularly since there has always been a sort of clumsiness to some of the more intellectual lyrics. However, Persistence of Time is their most lyrically consistent album, and the music simply rages. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide

Album information

Anthrax returned to the studio in the fall of 1989 with Mark Dodson (who produced the previous album, State of Euphoria) to start work on their fifth album. Recording of the album was difficult, with a large structure fire causing the band to lose more than $100,000 worth of gear and their recording studio in January 1990. Following their personal disaster the band moved to a different studio in late February of that year to finish work on the album.

The lyrical focus of Persistence of Time is the need for tolerance and peace.

This would be the last proper studio album to feature Joey Belladonna on vocals.

The introduction to the song "Intro to Reality" featured dialogue from an episode of The Twilight Zone called "Deaths-Head Revisited".

Keep It In The Family, In My World, and Belly of The Beast were later rerecorded with the John Bush/Rob Caggiano lineup for the album The Greater Of Two Evils.

Reception

Persistence of Time was certified gold by the RIAA. Its highest Billboard Music Chart position was #24 on the Billboard 200 chart.

New York Times (11/18/90) - "..the music carries the exhilaration of a desperate struggle."
