PCS

(communications) A mobile telephone service in which pocket-sized telephones carried by the users communicate via small low-power transmitter-receiver antennas that are installed throughout a city or community. Abbreviated PCS.

(1) (Personal Communications Services) Refers to wireless services that emerged after the U.S. government auctioned commercial licenses in 1994 and 1995. This radio spectrum in the 1.8-2 GHz range is typically used for digital cellular transmission that competes with analog and digital services in the 800 MHz and 900 MHz bands.

(2) (Personal Conferencing Specification) A videoconferencing technology that uses Intel's Indeo compression method. It is endorsed by the Intel-backed Personal Conferencing Working Group (PCWG). Initially competing against H.320, Intel subsequently announced its videoconferencing products will also be H.320 compliant.
