(b Florence, c. 1367; d Florence, 6 April 1446). Italian painter and designer. An extensively documented Florentine painter to whom no work can be securely attributed, he was greatly esteemed by his contemporaries. The chronicler Giovanni Cavalcanti considered him on a par with Gentile da Fabriano, Filippo Brunelleschi and Lorenzo Ghiberti. Cosimo de' Medici was one of his patrons and loaned him a considerable sum in gold florins when his daughter was married (Procacci, p. 20).
