Peter Docherty

Docherty, Peter (b Blackpool, 21 June 1944). British designer. He trained at Regent Street Polytechnic, Central School of Art and Design, and the Slade. His many ballet designs include Peter Darrell's Ephemeron (Western Theatre Ballet, 1968), Tales of Hoffmann (American Ballet Theatre production, 1973), and Mary, Queen of Scots (Scottish Ballet, 1976), and many works by Hynd, including In a Summer Garden (Royal Ballet, 1972), The Sanguine Fan and Nutcracker (both London Festival Ballet, 1976), Rosalinda (PACT Ballet, 1977, London Festival Ballet, 1979, and Berlin Opera Ballet, 1998), Les Valses (Grands Ballets Canadiens, 1980), The Seasons (Houston Ballet, 1980), Hunchback of Notre Dame (Houston Ballet, 1988), and Sleeping Beauty (new production, English National Ballet, 1993); also W. Dollar's Francesca da Rimini (Asami Maki Ballet, 1978) and Louther's Cages of Love (Dance Theatre Corporation, 1988). He has lectured on Theatre Design at Wimbledon School of Art and at St Martins Central School of Art and Design where he has been professor since 1996. His publications include Design for Performance—from Diaghilev to the Pet Shop Boys (1996).
