Biography

Canadian-born, Yale-trained Peter Donat made his mark on the theatrical world with his rich portrayals of such larger-than-life characters as Cyrano de Bergerac. Donat brought some of this grandiosity into his film work, which includes appearances in films as diverse as The Godfather II (1974), The China Syndrome (1979), War of the Roses (1987), Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988), and The Babe (1992). His TV-series roles include Arthur Raymond in Rich Man, Poor Man -- Book 2 (1977) and Elmo Tyson in Flamingo Road (1980). Peter Donat was making occasional appearances on the syndicated TV sci-fier Time Trax (1993), gesticulating his way through the role of Dr. Mordecai (Mo) Sahmbi, the ee-vil scientist who used the time-traveling TRAX machine for his own nefarious purposes. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Peter Donat (born 20 January 1928) is a Canadian/American actor known for his roles in American television.

Biography

Early life

Donat was born Pierre Collingwood Donat in Kentville, Nova Scotia, Canada, the son of Marie (née Bardet) and Philip Ernst Donat, a landscape gardener.[1] He is a nephew of British actor Robert Donat and brother to Richard Donat. Donat immigrated to the United States in 1950, studied drama at Yale, and first came to attention as a stage actor in the lead of a production of Cyrano de Bergerac.

Career

In 1965, he was featured in the cast as Vince Conway on Moment of Truth. That show was the only Canadian serial ever broadcast on a commercial television network in the United States. His credits include: Mission: Impossible, Banacek, The Waltons, Hawaii Five-O, Charlie's Angels, Lou Grant, Dallas, Quincy, Hart to Hart, Hill Street Blues, Simon and Simon and Murder She Wrote. He also starred in Cyrano de Bergerac playing the title role, in 1972 on the PBS anthology Theatre in America. He was a regular cast member of the 1980s primetime serial, Flamingo Road as Elmo Tyson, and more recently had a recurring role as Bill Mulder, Agent Mulder's father, in The X Files.

Donat has also worked extensively in films. Some of his more prominent roles include The Godfather Part II (1974), The Hindenburg (1975), The China Syndrome (1979), The Babe (1992), and the The Game (1997).

Donat was a prominent member of the American Conservatory Theatre (ACT) in San Francisco for a number of years. He has also been active in local theatre, most notably playing his first singing role as Professor Higgins in the 1988 Cabrillo Stage production of "My Fair Lady."

Personal life

Donat was married to actress Michael Learned from 1956 until 1972, when they divorced. They had three children — Caleb, Christopher and Lucas. He is currently married to his second wife, Marike. He is a naturalized United States citizen. Donat has spent recent years reading to school children in San Francisco, California.
