(1935–92)
Dublin-born, Belfast-educated engineer, who joined Arup. Among the many schemes on which he worked were Utzon's Sydney Opera House shell-vaults (1957–73—he was resident engineer on the project from 1963), the structural solution of the design for the Centre Pompidou, Paris, by Piano and Rogers (1971–7), Rogers's Lloyd's Building, London (1979–87), Foster's Stansted Airport, Essex (1981–91), Spreckelsen's Grande Arche, Paris (1986), and MBM's Pabellon del Futuro, Seville (1992). In association with Piano his projects included the Stadium, Bari (1988–90), Kansai International Airport, Japan (1988–96), and the Menil Gallery, Houston, TX (1981–6). With Ritchie and Martin Francis (1942– ) he was involved on the design of the National Museum of Science, Technology, and Industry, La Villette, Paris.
