Plot

A highly charged early silent melodrama, Phantoms starred French-born Eugenie Besserer as a stage star who spurns her devoted manager (Wheeler Oakman) in favor of dallying with a young artist (Harold Lockwood), realizing too late what she has lost. Hailing from France, Eugenie Besserer usually specialized in playing devoted mothers. "The Ellen Terry of the Screen," as she was known in the early days of her career, is best remembered for playing Al Jolson's mother in The Jazz Singer (1927), the musical drama that started the sound craze.
