Since the 1999 elections, he has been MP for Whangarei, the city of his birth.
He became Minister of Housing and Minister of Fisheries in the Fifth National Government in 2008. Following 'errors' found in his expense reports, he resigned these positions in February 2010.[1] He was reinstated the following month, following a report which cleared him of any deliberate wrongdoing.[2]
