Philip 'Phil' Wilson[2] (born 31 May 1959) is a British Labour Party politician, who was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Sedgefield on 19 July 2007.[3] The by-election was held following the resignation of former Prime Minister and member for Sedgefield, Tony Blair.[4][5]
The son of a Fishburn colliery worker, Wilson has lived in the Sedgefield constituency all of his life.[5] After attending Trimdon Secondary Modern and Sedgefield Comprehensive School, Wilson became a shop assistant before moving on to be a clerical worker in the civil service where he was a lay-trade union official.[5] Wilson has also worked as a gambling lobbyist.[6] Wilson lives in Trimdon with his girlfriend Margaret where he runs a public relations firm.[4]
Wilson is known for being one of the "Famous Five", a group of local Labour Party members who selected a young Tony Blair as the Labour candidate for Sedgefield for the 1983 election.[4]
Wilson has been an Assistant Whip for the Labour Party since the 2010 General Election.
