Biography

A child actor on stage in the early 1900s, Philip Tannura appeared as a juvenile in several Edison one-reelers, in 1912 and 1913, before becoming a noted stills photographer and cameraman. Serving in World War I as a cameraman for the U.S. Signal Corps, Tannura later joined Paramount Eastern Studio, and was a cameraman for bucolic 1910s star Charles Ray at FBO. He was sent to Europe by Paramount after the changeover to sound and later joined Gaumont British, photographing scores of the so-called Quota Quickies, from 1934 to 1942. In Hollywood from 1942, Tannura went to work for low-budget company PRC and later did his fair share of television. His namesake son was also a television cameraman. ~ Hans J.
